Interstates 81 and 77 converge here and carry approximately 60-70,000 cars per day. These major routes connect the coastal south and greater southeast to the entire northeast and near-midwest. Connection between cities like Detroit and Charleston, Washington, DC, and Atlanta, and Charlotte and Cleveland means you’ll pass through Wythe County.
In fact, we’re located halfway between the Canadian border and Florida as well as between many industrial centers and Eastern ports in Norfolk, Wilmington, Charleston, and Philadelphia.
A robust service system exists for the travelling and transporting public in our area and competitive fuel prices add to the convenience.
Norfolk Southern’s main line (Crescent Corridor) runs adjacent to Progress Park and through Wythe County. Several industries in our area use rail extensively, including Amcor Rigid Plastics, PepsiCo, and others. Double-stacked and intermodal cars are numerous that pass through this area.
The Heartland Corridor connects the busy Port of Virginia with Chicago and the Midwest and is the largest rail project of the past century. Our rail line connects directly with this double-stacked intermodal route and takes a day off the transit time between the East Coast and the Midwest. This saves time and money.
Not only is there prime access to markets through Virginia’s Highway system, we also have access to one of Virginia’s greatest assets, the Port of Virginia. Port of Virginia is part of the deepest harbor in the Eastern US, sharing it with the world’s largest naval base. Fifty-foot channels are offered as well as 30 miles of parallel class I railroads, 6 terminals, and an inland port in Front Royal, VA. The open sea is just 2.5 hours away and the next stop can be anywhere on the globe.
Three publicly-owned general aviation airports serve this area, all within a half hour’s drive. All offer modern terminal buildings and service facilities.

Twin County Airport (HLX) is located just beyond Wythe County’s southern border inside Carroll County just west of Hillsville and features a 4200’ runway.
New River Valley (PSK) is located northeast of Wytheville in Pulaski County near Dublin. A 6201’ runway is offered as well as a US Customs presence at this ILS airport.
Commercial airports with scheduled service aren’t far and give access to numerous locations across the globe. Within two hours’ drive, you’ll find four major aviation facilities.
Roanoke/Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) is an hour’s drive on I-81 north near Roanoke. Service is provided by Delta, United, US Airways, and Allegiant to markets including New York (LGA), Atlanta, Charlotte, Philadelphia, and Chicago (among others). Parking and access to I-81 are both convenient.
Tri-Cities Regional Airport (TRI) is located near Blountville, Tennessee, part of the Tennessee/Virginia Tri-Cities metro area.
